About the AI Education Work Group
The Education Work Group of the IEEE AI Coalition is focused on advancing the understanding and responsible integration of artificial intelligence within professional and workplace learning contexts.
We are working to support educators, trainers, and instructors in preparing the global workforce to adapt and thrive in an AI-driven world. Our mission is to identify and share effective practices, frameworks, and resources that help individuals use AI responsibly, ethically, and effectively in their professional lives.
Guiding Questions
- What does effective professional development look like when every worker engages with AI?
- How can workplace reskilling balance automation with human growth and agency?
- How does AI reshape teaching and learning, both as a subject and a technology?
- How should AI compliment, maintain, or improve a professional’s cognitive ability and professional responsibility?
Context and Purpose
Governments, educational systems, and professional organizations worldwide increasingly emphasize the need to build AI knowledge, skills, and ethical awareness across all sectors. We are focused on the educational requirements for empowering professionals to participate in the next evolution of the digital economy. Examples include UNESCO’s AI competency frameworks, the European Commission’s AI skills and literacy initiatives, and similar national and regional efforts linking AI readiness to workforce development.
Within this landscape, IEEE’s community of engineers, technologists, and educators is well positioned to contribute its technical insight and standards expertise to support educators and professional trainers as they navigate these changes.
Our Objectives
As a volunteer working group, we focus on developing shared understanding, practical guidance, and educational resources that reflect IEEE’s values and technical rigor.
We are working to:
- Describe what it means to be an “AI-aware” professional across technical and non-technical disciplines.
- Translate emerging AI capabilities and functionality into accessible concepts for professional learning and workforce training.
- Highlight practices that foster transparency, equity, and human-centered collaboration with AI.
